For nine years Johnna was co-Artistic and Managing Director of Vancouver's Solo Collective Theatre, developing and premiering new work by Western Canadian playwrights. Recent directing credits include Annie for the Gateway Theatre, Little Women: The Musical for Persephone Theatre, and The Rez Sisters for Theatre @ UBC.

She has received Vancouver's Jessie Richardson Award as Outstanding Director (The Triumph of Love, Blackbird Theatre, also named Outstanding Production) and the Ray Michal Award for Outstanding Body of Work by an Emerging Director.

Johnna spent much of 2011 as a Neil Munro Intern Director at the Shaw Festival, acting as Assistant Director to Jackie Maxwell, Molly Smith and Peter Hinton, and directing A Phoenix Too Frequent (Shaw Director's Project). In 2011/12 she will direct A Christmas Story for Persephone Theatre, Saskatoon, and The Merry Wives of Windsor for Bard on the Beach in Vancouver.
